Detailed Description
Fundamentals of Woodcarving with Mary May
Saturday & Sunday, December 7 & 8, from 9:00am to 5:00pm
Class Size: 12
Hands-On Workshop
Highland Woodworking is very pleased to have professional woodcarver, Mary May on-hand for a weekend of carving instruction this winter. Currently residing in Charleston, SC, Mary has been carving for over 20 years and has studied with a variety of European carvers around the world; including carving Master Konstantinos Papadakis. Mary will begin by showing how to sharpen gouges to a razor sharp edge, a vital skill needed for successful carving. During the class, you will carve 2 projects in relief - a decorative floral design, and a classic scallop shell. Mary will show the techniques of safely holding gouges, working with grain direction, how to layer elements in a carving, and tricks on how to make a small set of carving gouges do more than what they were meant to do. Don’t miss this opportunity to launch your carving skills off to solid start, which will enable you to begin adding a whole new range of embellishment and creativity to your furniture designs. Mary teaches woodcarving at a variety of schools and workshops throughout the country and has recently started an online video woodcarving school. See a sample of her work at Marymaycarving.com
