We are pleased to welcome back master chair maker Peter Galbert for a week long class on building a Continuous Arm Windsor Chair. Peter is devoted to ensuring his students understand the subtle nuances of working with green wood and will guide you in using hand tools in building a chair that historically has and will, stand the test of time; in its quality of construction, its elegant visual appeal and its exceptional sitting comfort.
You will learn all aspects of using green wood from selection, riving/splitting, shaving, bending, carving and joinery. Peter will cover tool sharpening, wood technology, and elements of chair design so you will leave with the knowledge to assist you in building your second chair on your own. Hell have plenty of special tips and techniques for you to learn to help you solve the angle puzzles of drilling and assembling a Windsor chair.
Peter has taught at select woodworking schools around the country, has numerous articles published in national woodworking publications, is the author of the comprehensive textbook on Windsor Chairmaking tilted Chairmaker's Notebook, and teaches at his workshop in New England, where he builds chairs full time. His work integrates the best of time-honored techniques and demonstrates a deep understanding of materials and methods. Peter's passion for teaching, inventing, and sharing his insights about the life of a chair maker can be sampled online at Chair Notes Blog or his website at

You will need to bring your own tools, please check the tool list on our website for details. Please give yourself time to source the more specialized chair making tools. They often have limited availability due to the unique nature of the tools and should be ordered far in advanced of the class.

Highland Blogger Terry Chapman took Peter's class for building a Child's Windsor balloon back chair, and provided a great account of it over on the Highland Blog. Take a look at it here to get a sense of what the class is like for a student!
