The Better Pen Mandrel Saver

Tailstock pressure holds ordinary pen mandrels in place on the lathe. Trouble is, if you advance the tailstock too much, the excessive pressure can make the thin mandrel shaft flex or even bend permanently. This new product eliminates that problem so that you get more accurate turnings.

Although the Better Pen Mandrel Saver uses tailstock pressure to hold your turning blanks in place, it is designed so that the mandrel shaft absorbs none of that pressure (thus "saving" the mandrel shaft). With The Better Mandrel Saver, the free end of the shaft slides into a hole down the length of the live center. That means you can advance the tailstock to hold bushings and blanks in place with no risk of damaging the mandrel shaft, and you can quickly remove a finished pen and slide on new blanks.

The Better Pen Mandrel Saver is available with either a 1x8 tpi or a 1-1/4x8 tpi headstock fitting. Please select which headstock size you need. The live center has a No. 2 Morse taper. The mandrel shaft will accommodate 7mm tubes and bushings.
