When asked how to keep nails from splitting hardwood, carpenter's foreman
Fred T. used to holler, "Burn 'em in!"
Fred's secret weapon was the hard to find nail spinner. Chuck the spinner into any drill, insert a finish nail and drive it just shy of the wood's surface. After all the nails are in you go back and finish up with a hammer and nail set.
The nail spinner will work with 4d-10d (1-1/2" - 3") finish nails in even rock maple. It works so well you may want to get an extra as a back-up in case yours gets legs. Be careful, nails get very hot when spinning.
