Square/Phillips combination drive with unique serrated pilot threads to eliminate most pre-drilling!
Deep, sharp threads, thin shanks and visibly-superior finishing complemented by an exclusive heat-bonded PTFE coating make these screws penetrate more easily than any others. Spax screws are extraordinarily strong, and their unique "toothed" pilot threads make them almost universally self-drilling. You can drive #10 x 3-1/2" screws into unpiloted hard maple - normally an exercise in wasted screws - with no breakage. Their head design is the most convenient available: they feature a combination recess that accepts either Phillips or Square Drive bits.
We stock flat-head Spax wood screws in standard zinc coat for interior work, yellow zinc plated, "organic coat" galvanized, and stainless steel. We also stock a selection of pan-head screws in zinc plate only. Yellow zinc screws fall between regular zinc plated and galvanized screws in terms of corrosion resistance. Their color makes them a very strong substitute for brass. Spax galvanized screws are ideal for most outdoor applications. They're dipped and then spun to distribute the zinc evenly, resulting in a surface as smooth as electro-plate, but considerably more resistant to corrosion. Stainless screws are recommended for marine applications or wherever you want the best you can get.
#6 screws use #1 Square Drive or Phillips bits. #8 and #10 screws use #2 bits. #12 and #14 use #3 bits.
