Detailed Description
Sunday-Saturday, September 20 - 26, 2009 from 9:00am to 5:00pm
Class Size: 10
Hands-On Workshop
This beautiful rocking chair has a shield-style seat and authentic Windsor lines that combine to create an amazingly comfortable chair, a common trait of every Buchanan designed chair. Students will use traditional hand tools and construction methods with the spindles and continuous arm being split from oak to oak, shaped with a drawknife and steam bent as needed. The seat will be carved with a scorp from Eastern White Pine and the rockers sawn from oak. Students are provided with legs, arm supports and stretchers that have been turned by hand from split maple.
You'll work hard and have lots of fun, and come away with your own handcrafted, heirloom quality rocker to eventually hand down to future generations to treasure. All materials are provided.
Well-known Chairmaker Peter Galbert will be assisting Curtis in this class. He is a full time chairmaker and instructor from Jeffersonville, NY. Peter has taught at the Penland School, John C. Campbell Folk School and has presented drilling techniques at the Dewitt Museum at Colonial Williamsburg.
You will need to bring your own tools, please check the tool list on our website for details. You'll also need a Shaving Horse, which we will have available for rent if you don't own one. Please be sure to reserve one when you register for the class.
