Class Size: 8
Hands-On Workshop

If you are one of those woodworkers that has precious offcuts that can’t be thrown away in hopes of waiting for that perfect project, or if you have limited shop time, but need to keep creating beautiful, useful objects in wood, then this class is for you. Spoons are fun to carve, and allow for lots of creativity and can be carved almost anywhere with a few simple sharp tools. We’ll begin by roughing on the bandsaw, then move into using carving tools to refine your spoons. You will come away with a functional spoon and the knowledge to carve many more. We will cover the following strategies for hand carving wooden spoons:

  • Sourcing the wood – Using scraps, green wood or firewood
  • Safety
  • Design Considerations
  • Work Holding Strategies
  • Finishing Choices

Required Tool List:
There are several tools that can be used for carving spoons, so basically you will need a curved blade for hollowing and a straight blade for straight cuts. Bring what you have and we'll discuss the possibilities. We will have a few extra tools for you to try such as hook knives, gouges, draw knives and spokeshaves.
