Carving in the round with Sabiha Mujtaba

Friday, October 2 from 5:30-8:30 pm &
Saturday & Sunday, October 3 & 4, 2015 from 9:00am to 5:00pm
Class Size: 8
Hands-On Workshop

3-dimensional carving is the art of creating a likeness of an object, being or the mind's abstraction that can be seen from all directions, planes and angles 'in-the-round'. The craft of carving in 3-dimensional is to know how to successfully remove all the unwanted parts from a solid block of wood.
In this in-depth class, you will make a scale model in clay, transfer the various profiles on all flat sides of a block of wood, cut out the waste and begin the shaping process. Carving your free-form design will involve deep shapes, undercutting, and possibly through cuts.

The size of the basswood block you’ll be carving will measure approximately 6” x 6” x 10” long. You’re welcome to use your own design to work with, like a stand alone free-form carving, or perhaps a functional idea incorporating a sculptured bowl, vase, or candle holder as part of the design. You could even consider creating a carved base specifically for a favorite piece of artwork you own and that would benefit from being on a carved pedestal. However, if you don't have something in mind, a choice of ideas will be available for you to explore.

Tools utilized will include the band saw, coping saw, carving gouges, and power carving tools. Emphasis will be on the safe and appropriate use of the tools. You will learn how to secure and stabilize your free-form work by using C-clamps, hold- downs, carver's clamps and sand bags. Sharpening methods and care of tools will also be discussed and demonstrated. This class is open to all levels. Students with previous knowledge of relief carving are encouraged to attend so they may expand their 3-dimensional carving skills.

Students serious about carving are encouraged to bring their own carving tools (see tool list). A limited variety of tools will be available for sharing.
