Detailed Description
Saturday & Sunday, February 13 & 14, 2010 from 9:00am to 5:00pm
Class Size: 10
Hands-On Workshop
Carved architectural elements on furniture, whether it is a classic like an acanthus leaf or something from your imagination, can enhance the design of the piece if it is properly proportioned, appropriate to the piece, and judiciously placed. Chad will begin this class by focusing on design concepts in carving - when to use carved elements (not every piece of furniture benefits), where to put them if you do use them and, just as importantly, why use them in the first place - just because you can, doesn't mean you should. He will show examples of his work to illustrate these points. He will then guide you through the process of designing and carving your own panel, from drawing to layout, from first cut to finished piece.
In this class, you will carve at least one mahogany panel in a choice of designs, one of which will be the classic acanthus leaf. The panel will be surrounded by a molding of your choice - egg and dart or rope - which you will also learn to carve. Time permitting, Chad will also show you how to carve the acanthus molding.
The mahogany panels and basswood practice blanks will be provided.
