We have been searching for years for an affordable slow-speed 8" bench grinder that runs smoothly. Alas, each one that we tried suffered the same affliction - too much vibration for truly accurate sharpening (a condition that happens to be common among grinders selling in the $100 price range). Now, the engineers at Rikon Tools have put an end to our search.
Rikon's model 80-820 bench grinder runs at 1750 rpm, slow enough to dramatically reduce any likelihood of overheating your edge tools. The grinder is powered by a quiet-running 1 hp 120 V continuous-duty induction motor. It's very smooth running and comes with bigger, beefier wheel washers than we've seen on any other grinder. The 80-820 grinder comes equipped with friable, white aluminum oxide 8" diameter by 1-1/2" thick grinding wheels (one 60 grit and one 120 grit). They're ideal for sharpening HSS turning tools or grinding chipped chisels and plane irons. The grinder has heavy duty tool rests and an adjustable LED work light to aid your sharpening. Comes with two clear eye shields (one with 2x magnification).
