Detailed Description
Saturday & Sunday, February 27 & 28, 2010 from 9:00am to 5:00pm
Class Size: 30
Demonstration Seminar
Handcrafting a fine steel-string guitar involves a multitude of steps, but few are as critical in effecting the overall sound characteristics of the finished in-strument as the steps taken in the construction and tuning of the guitar's top. During this two day seminar, the Director of the Leeds Guitarmaking School in Northhampton MA, Ivon Schmukler, will provide you with a rare opportunity to observe the intricacies & nuances involved with the complete construction of a steel string guitar top. Ivon will cover wood selection and the mechanical & architectural aspects of materials & design regarding a comprehensive approach to building a top. You'll learn how to join a top, how to cut, inlay and level a rosette ring, & how to cut out the sound hole. Ivon will demonstrate the preparation, shaping & application of the bracing to the deck, including how use a radius board which provides the arched surface upon which the top is built. Lastly, Ivon will take you through the process of scalloping and fin-ishing the braces, with a discussion of tap-tuning to reveal and define the instrument's tone. Building guitars since 1972, Ivon is also one of the country's leading restorers of vintage Martin guitars. Ivon's years of experience building & restoring guitars & in instructing others to build their own guitars, will assist you in gaining the knowledge & confidence you'll need for embarking on your own guitar project. If you're a woodworker and/or music lover wishing to build your own guitar, you won't want to miss this weekend!
