Detailed Description
Ox-Head hatchets and axes have been manufactured in Wuppertal, Germany since 1781. The name is synonymous with quality and functional beauty among foresters, carpenters and boatbuilders world-wide. Each axe is expertly and carefully manufactured to the highest standards. Particular attention is paid to careful hardening of the steels, which accounts for the long-lasting sharpness in Ox-Head tools. Ox-Head is the official supplier of axes for the Stihl Timbersports Series.
Felling axes are designed for efficient felling and limbing of trees. Their cutting edges are very thin, and taper quite slowly back towards the eye. This minimizes the axe's wedging action as it cuts, enabling it to take satisfyingly deep bites as you notch logs. It also makes the axe head a bit vulnerable if you use it as a lever or a splitting maul.
The Small Iltis Europe is a single-bit model based on a traditional German pattern. It has a 2.8 lb. head, a 5" wide blade, and a 28" hickory handle. Overall weight 4 lbs.
