Detailed Description
Ox-Head Right Hand Broad Axe
Ox-Head hatchets and axes have been manufactured in Wuppertal, Germany since 1781. The name is synonymous with quality and functional beauty among foresters, carpenters and boatbuilders world-wide. Each axe is expertly and carefully manufactured to the highest standards. Particular attention is paid to careful hardening of the steels, which accounts for the long-lasting sharpness in Ox-Head tools.
Ox-Head is the official supplier of axes for the Stihl Timbersports Series.
Broad axes are used for squaring and shaping logs and timbers. These broad axes from Ox-Head echo the Lower Bavarian Pattern and are particularly well suited to squaring timbers. The flat-sided head is chisel-sharpened with a single bevel, which makes flattening the side of a log as easy as it gets. The right hand model has the flat face on the left hand side of the axe so that you can chop flush on the right side of the workpiece. Both have American hickory handles which are bent slightly so that they will not interfere with your work.
The heads on both models are 2.2 lb with 5-1/2" cutting edges and the handles are 15-3/4".
Choosing a Broad Axe: Left Hand or Right Hand?
Broad axes (and hatchets) are described by the side of the log they cut.
A right hand broad axe is used on the right hand side of the log (when looking down the length of the log.) Consequently, a right hand broad axe has a head that is flat on the left side and a handle that deflects to the right (away from the flat face) so that it clears the log.
A left hand broad axe is used on the left hand side of the log (when looking down the length of the log.) Consequently, a left hand broad axe has a head that is flat on the right side and a handle that deflects to the left (away from the flat face) so that it clears the log.
