Steel City Portable Planer with 13 inch Helical Head
Please note: The current version of the 40200H planer uses 2-sided cutters. All of the 40200H planers that we sold used the 4-sided cutters.
Helical cutterheads have recently become all the rage on large industrial thickness planers. Significantly quieter in operation, ease of blade maintenance, and improved overall quality of the finish are the benefits that outweigh the typical extra cost of helical cutterheads.
Steel City's recently patented design has created a breakthrough in the cost of producing a helical style cutterhead, making their application practical and affordable for the first time for smaller thickness planers.
Our Steel City model 40200H deluxe portable planer uses 26 four-sided HSS indexed cutting inserts arranged in six rows around the cutterhead, with the cutters in each row slighty offset from their adjacent rows.
The resulting staggered cutting pattern means the knives cut with much reduced noise compared to conventional planer knives that beat relentlessly along the width of the workpiece thousands of times a minute.
With the 40200H planer, the staggered assembly of knife inserts means that a cutter is constantly in contact with the wood at all times instead of hammering it 3 times during every revolution like a conventional cutterhead does. This results in improved chip removal and huge noise reduction.
One set of knife inserts is estimated to last over 10,000 linear feet of planing before needing to be replaced. If one of the 26 knife inserts gets a nick after striking metal, the nicked knife insert can quickly and easily be rotated to expose a new clean edge and you're back in business producing uniformly smooth planed stock.
The footprint of the 40200H is 13" x 22" and it will fit on either our Shop Fox Tool Table or our HTC Tool Table.
The planer is powered by a 15 amp 120 volt motor. The unit weighs 83 lbs.
PLEASE NOTE: The installed cutterhead and knives come from the factory with a coating of cosmoline. This protective grease must be removed BEFORE using the planer. Failing to do so will fling the oily residue everywhere, spoiling your wood and causing wood shavings to cling to the underside of the planer.
This planer uses Steel City 40935 4-sided cutters.
