Detailed Description

Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 9:00am to 4:00PM Class Size: 10
Hands-On Workshop

What if you need to flatten a 12" board but only have a 6" jointer? How can you crosscut 36 door stiles to the exact same length without a chopsaw? Why is this board still the shape of a potato chip after 30 passes through the planer? These and other questions about stock prep will be answered in this class about how to get from crooked, roughsawn lumber to flat, straight, square, and uniform furniture parts. Jim emphasizes flexible methods that won't tie you down to one single machine or approach to getting your wood ready for joint cutting and shaping. Both hand tool skills (scrub, jack, and jointer planes; bench hook, winding sticks, shooting board) and creative uses of machinery like the bandsaw, tablesaw, and yes, jointer and planer will be covered. You'll leave this class with sharper surfacing skills and a lifetime of freedom from S4S lumber.
