Detailed Description
Sunday, December 20, 2009 from 9:00am to 5:00pm
Class Size: 8
Hands-On Workshop
What is it that makes certain turned "spindles", be they a candle stick, a stair baluster, a table lamp or a magic wand draw attention to themselves, proving so pleasing to the viewer's eye that it becomes difficult not to want to touch the graceful curves and coves before you? How do you go from ordinary to exceptional in your spindle turnings? Let Hal Simmons teach you how elevate and refine your between-center turning skills so your turnings enter the realm of "exceptional".
Hal will cover aspects of architectural form and proportion so your projects will have a more cohesive, refined and balanced look. You'll learn how the intersection and transition from one detail to the next on a spindle is accomplished with flow, while keeping the crisp detail that is a hallmark of an exceptional turning. Hal will cover tool selection and tips on sharpening as you practice perfecting beads, coves, fillets, v-cuts, ogees and other profiles. You'll learn tips on using the loathed and loved skew chisel. Hal will show how to sand your refined profiles to keep them crisp and defined. The day will be focused on refining techniques, versus creating a particular finished project (though you may end of with an exceptional spindle or two in the process).
Tools and supplies provided, but you may bring along your favorite turning tools.
