Detailed Description

Understanding Drawknives and Spokeshaves with Grant Lutz

Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 09:30am to 12:30pm
Class Size: 7
Hands-On Workshop

The drawknife and spokeshave are immensely useful hand tools in just about any workshop, and are indispensable for chair making, boat building and for most aspects of green woodworking. However, these historic tools also have a reputation as being a bit esoteric for our modern shops and thus often remain in the dark recesses of our tool chests, underutilized & misunderstood.
We invite you to spend an evening with Grant Lutz as he illuminates the ways of the drawknife and spokeshave to help you get the most of what these tools have to offer. Grant will cover the different styles of drawknives & spokeshaves, from the old to the new, and their proper use for efficient stock removal. He'll go over the steps in reconditioning old drawknives to get them in shape so they can actually work and will show you methods and tips on sharpening their edges. Grant will also demonstrate using the tools while seated at a shavehorse, which is the favored method for holding stock when creating spindles with a drawknife and spokeshave. You'll learn about reading and following the fibers in the wood when shaping, a key concept in creating the strong, resilient parts needed for successful steam bending.
You'll find this a great class as a primer for Windsor chair making & unplugged green woodworking or if you just want to resurrect your grandfather's drawknife from the back wall of the shop and finally put it to work making a walking stick!
Feel free to bring to class any of your drawknives / spokeshaves (rusted or not) for Grant's evaluation on how to proceed for reconditioning them back to a working state.

For your safety, when attending a hands-on class, be sure to wear closed toe footwear.
