Build Your Woodworking Skills in
Peter Galbert's Windsor Chair Class
Building a chair is on many a woodworker's list of things to try, and what better way to build
your skills then to do it with the help of experienced chairmaker Peter Galbert.
This October, Highland Woodworking is offering a week-long, hands-on class in building a child's
Windsor balloon back chair. Don't let the fact that this is a "child's" chair deter you - it can
accommodate adults comfortably and is only referred to as a child's chair as it has an elevated, 21"
high seat that will help your little ones reach a table or desk. But beyond its practical uses, the
Balloon Back Windsor Chair will be a beautiful heirloom accent piece in any room of your house. And
the best part is, you will have built it yourself!
The seven-day class is broken down into 2 days of lecture seminar on Saturday & Sunday, October
23rd & 24th, then a 5-day hands-on class where you get your hands dirty trying all aspects of
traditional Windsor chair construction. Peter will teach wood technology, chair design and
sharpening techniques needed for traditional chair making tools. Lectures and demonstrations will
cover techniques such as riving off parts from the log, shaving them to dimension with a draw knife
and steam bending the chair's bowed back. By the end of the week you will have an assembled chair
ready for you to apply a finish when you get home.
Peter Galbert has been building chairs full time at his Jefferson, NY workshop for almost a
decade. He teaches at select woodworking schools around the country and we are honored to have him
offering this class at Highland Woodworking. His insights are shared on his
blog, where he discusses his passion for
teaching and building as well as thoughts about the life of a chairmaker.
Students of Peter Galbert's Windsor Chair building class will leave not only with the chair they
build during the week in class, but also the skills they will need to build chairs on their own at
home. The class is suitable for a wide range, from students new to Windsor chair building to
more experienced woodworkers who have made a Windsor already but would like to add a new & distinct
design to their repertoire. This class will provide a great chance to work hard, have fun, and learn
a whole new way of woodworking!
