Notice About our Woodworking Classes
As a commitment to serving you as safely as possible, Highland Woodworking has suspended the sign up for our
classes until further notice. Once it's established that our classes can be held safely, we will resume sign
ups at that time. Please check back to our website for updates. We look forward to offering our classes again
soon. Beginning Character Carving
Saturday, August 8, 2020 from 9:00am to 4:30pm
Class Size: 8
Hands-On Workshop
This beginner's class will jumpstart you on the skills needed to carve small 3-dimensional figurines.
Caricature carving is a load of fun and provides a lot of carving
latitude for creativity. Instructor Jim LeClaire has over 20 years of carving experience
and will guide you through a comprehensive, step-by-step focus for carving characters so
you can successfully bring forth a figurine from a block of wood. You'll learn layout and
design, the proper techniques of roughing out and detailing using carving knives and palm
chisels, as well as how to apply surface textures. In addition Jim will share his simple
methods of painting in detail for adding realism or whimsy that will help bring your
carving to life (though you'll do the finishing at home). Throughout the day you'll also
pick up some tips on maintaining a honed edge on your tools. This class has a required list of tools you'll need to bring to class. If you are new
to carving, we suggest Flexcut carving tools or another brand that come pre-honed and are
ready-for-use right out of the box.)
