Luthier's Friend Sanding Station
(Drill press is not included)
The Luthier's Friend Precision Sander is a one stop sanding station and thickness
sander designed to meet the demands of anyone requiring precision. Luthiers,
woodworkers, model makers, instrument makers, knife makers, bow makers, boat
builders, home shop owners, and architectural modelers will all find it useful.
You can thickness wood to precisely down to 0.010", make duplicate parts using
templates, and shape complex parts freehand.
Maloof-inspired rocker instructor Charles Brock also recommends it as an economical
alternative for sanding the rocker laminations before gluing up.
The Luthier's Friend consists of a 10" x 12" laminated base with a micro-adjustable
fence and specially-made 2" diameter by 3" long sanding drum. With it, you can thickness and pattern sand
wood up to 2-3/4" tall. Includes 3 sanding sleeves to fit the drum - 1 each of 50 grit, 80 grit and 120 grit.
Mount it on your drill press, make a few quick adjustments, and you are ready to go.
Lock the fence in position and sand your material to a rough dimension. Remove a
few thousandths of an inch by turning the spring loaded micro-adjust knob and
running the part through again.
When the Robo-Sander sanding drum is locked in the full down position, the guide
wheel becomes a lower bearing, ensuring the stability needed for accurate thickness
sanding.
Dust free operation is achieved with even the smallest shop vac attached to the
dust shroud surrounding the drum.
In the up position, use the Robo-Sander flush trim sander to duplicate parts using
a template or even an old part as a pattern.
Lower the flush trim bearing into the table and you have a very stable sanding drum
with which you can quickly freehand complex shapes.
When you are not using the Luthier's Friend, hang it on the wall and use the drill
press as you normally would.
