Detailed Description
Bad Axe Toolworks D8 24 inch Panel Saw
If Mr. Henry Disston were alive today, we think he would be stunned proud by these D8 24 inch handsaws / panel saws
crafted by Bad Axe Toolworks. Inspired by the Disston made panel saws from days long past, these rip-roaring, cross-cutting
beauties have taken the realities of a “craftsman's saw” to a whole new level of aesthetics and accuracy.
The D8 is made from 1095 spring steel sawplate, with a Rockwell hardness range of 49-52. The plate is hammer-tensioned,
taper ground wet to reduce heat and temper loss, and worked to strategic thicknesses at differing plate locations. This
careful consideration creates a very stiff blade for a panel saw. And the taper ground allows the blade to move more easily
within the kerf, increasing the saw's cutting efficiency. The grinding gives the plate a slight ribbon pattern striping,
reminiscent of the faint, but beautiful markings on a tiger shark. And just like a tiger shark, you get sharp and
efficient teeth made for serious cutting!
For Bad Axe, it's all about the teeth. They choose to hammer set a saw's teeth, deforming the tooth sideways with a high
force strike (instead of bending them into set). This “coining” of the metal makes for a clean, crisp, breakline for the set
that makes it very accurate. Couple this with dead straight teeth joining, appropriate tooth geometry for the cutting task
of the blade, impeccable hand filing of the cutting edges and you get saws that cut flawlessly. The tooth work done on a
Bad Axe saw is not sophisticated per se (the hammer setting happens on Disston equipment from the 1870's), but it is performed
so exceedingly well, and to a level of attention few companies are willing to subscribe to, that it's the reason you hear that
Bad Axe handsaws “cut like they're on a rail”.
These D8 models have the original (standard) closed-style handle grip that works equally well, regardless of an operator's
handedness. Made from durable quartersawn white oak and patterned after the elegant and graceful handles adorning Disston panel
saws from 1887-1896, these handles give a light and bright feel to a tool that is quite ready to do some heavy cutting. A lustrous
oil and wax finish highlights the grain of the white oak, feels great to the hand and is a finish that's easy to reapply / repair,
should your neighbor ding up the handle. (Tip: loaning your fine tools to a neighbor should be done judiciously.) Brass slotted
nuts and deep dish decorative medallion hold the saw plate to the handle with an air of traditional elegance.
If you own a Bad Axe joinery saw, you already know how straight and true their saws can cut. Now with a Bad Axe D8 panel saw,
your hand tool work can handle the rough and tumble of larger scale cutting tasks with precision and efficiency. Keep the circular
saw in the cupboard. Stay unplugged and get cutting!
