Class Description

The name spokeshave dates back to the 15th century, but the form of the tool has a much longer history. At its most basic, it is a sharp edge wedged into the center of a handle used to shape wood. In its more modern iteration, unsurprisingly, it was used to shape the spokes of a wheel. Since then, its usage has expanded from wagon wheels to shaping or smoothing parts for nearly any handmade project. The basic design for this class comes from a boxwood shaver produced by T. Pilkington in the mid-1800’s.

In this class, Rusty will guide you through taking a block of Jatoba wood and transforming it into a useful shop tool. Taking a template, you will transfer it to your block of wood, and begin shaping it using a combination of saw and chisel work. Once it begins to resemble a spokeshave, you will then work on aligning and mating the blade to it. Finally, the class will wrap with finishing work such as shaping and smoothing the handle, personal ornamentation, and discussion about what to use to protect the spokeshave from rust and wear.

While there are many woodworkers that have a spokeshave (or five), there are few woodworkers that have a spokeshave as unique as one made by their own hand. The cost of the class includes all materials, but what you will leave the class with can be considered priceless!

For your safety, when attending a hands-on class, be sure to wear closed toe footwear.
