What's the difference between an Impact Driver and a Hammer Drill?

While both employ impacts to boost the power transmitted to the bit, Impact Drivers and Hammer Drills are are fundamentally different.

The impact driver uses rotational impacts around the shaft of the tool to apply more force to turn the bit. It's particularly useful for driving screws in hard or thick materials. It can be used to drill (with appropriate bits), but that's not its strength. The impact mechanism can not be turned off.

The hammer drill uses impacts along the length of the shaft to create percussive impacts which will help pulverize the material being drilled. It's particularly useful when drilling in hard materials like concrete. The hammer function can be turned off so the tool can be used as a standard drill.
