Finishing: MGM Wood Finishes

Many of my tips have mentioned my friend who learned how to finish furniture, cabinetry, etc, during his time in prison. He has shared and taught me a lot of the finishing tricks he has up his sleeve, which I am now sharing with you.
In last month's tip I discussed using acrylics for touch up. At the same time he taught me acrylics, he also taught me how
to create the "MGM" finishes that were very popular in the art deco
period. Fast forward some 85 years and these "two toned" finishes
(once again think shades of grey, black and white) are all the rage on
open-pore woods such as oak or ash.
To duplicate this affect simply apply the lighter color first and let dry completely. Next, thin the darker
color slightly with water and apply, making sure to rub the darker color
into the pores and then wipe off immediately with a wet cloth. If you
don't like the results just repaint and repeat. With a little practice on
scrap wood you'll be an expert in no time!
