Finishing: Lacquer Sanding Sealers

Lacquer sanding sealers are designed for use in a lacquer based finishing schedule. With the addition of zinc sterates, which act as a lubricant, sanding the sealer becomes much easier and faster. In short, a very smooth surface can be created with a lot less elbow grease.
Lacquer sanding sealers can be used under shellacs and varnishes as long as the the previous finish coat is properly dried and sanded before the application of the next coat. They dry rapidly, have good clarity and great adhesion to most substrates. Each coat of sealer will melt into the previous coat like fingernail polish allowing multiple coats to be applied in a day. Two or three coats should be sufficient depending on which type of wood you are using..2-3 coats on softer woods like pine, and 1-2 coats on harder woods like oak or maple.
Oil based glazes can be used between coats of sealer to further enhance the depth of the finish, however I recommend no more than two thin layers of glazes between coats of sealer because this could cause the overall finish to be slightly softer and therefore may not perform as well over time.
As always a little practice on scrap will go a long way.
