Detailed Description

Lie-Nielsen No. 6 Fore Plane

Lie Nielsen's No. 6 Fore Plane, also known as a Try or Trying Plane, measures 18" long, 7 1/2 lbs and with a blade 2-3/8" wide and .140 thick it will allow you to cover some serious board footage without the great mass of a large jointer plane. Lie-Nielsen's collection of bench planes covers the gamut from the little No. 1 to the beefy No. 8 Jointer - the No. 6 Fore Plane approaches the upper sizes of the range. Though it is sized midway between a Jack No. 5 1/2 and the Jointer No. 7 with 3 inches additional length, a half pound more in weight and noticeably extra room for your hand on the handle it feels like a substantial leap from the 5-1/2 Jack model. The Fore Plane can be used as a traditional jointer plane, smoothing peaks and valleys on shorter boards, but with a more prominently curved iron the No. 6 can also serve as a large Jack Plane, removing material from boards, working across the grain on the initial stages of flattening. Lee Laird has written extensively about the versatility of the No. 6 Plane in his hand plane fundamentals series.

Every Lie Nielsen bench plane features meticulous construction, low-tolerance machining and Bed Rock style body and frog design. Soles and sides are milled flat within less than .002" maximum deviation, and the finish is so smooth that these planes are nearly friction-free. The Fore Plane, like the Nos. 4-1/2, 5, 5-1/2, 7 & 8 are cast only in unbreakable ductile iron. Frogs on all Lie Nielsen models are cast in bronze. Bed Rock castings, both sole and side rails, are considerably heavier than those of ordinary planes, and the frog is radically more stable and more adjustable. Throat opening can be adjusted without removing the irons, and the iron remains fully supported no matter how small an opening you set. Irons are over 1/8" thick, providing extraordinarily smooth cutting action. Heavy irons, stable frogs and tiny throat openings combine to allow planing performance that's simply impossible with other planes; you can plane reversed grain, quilted or fiddleback figured timbers, and even knots with no tearout, no chatter, and no loss of control at all. Lie-Nielsen's polished bronze lever caps and custom cherry handles perfectly complement the quality of these beautiful tools.

No. 6 Fore Plane body unbreakable ductile iron only, Iron Width: 2-3/8" Overall Length: 18" Weight: 7.5 lbs. Made in the U.S.A.

Lee Laird from Lie Nielsen Tools Works produces an instructional series on hand plane use and care and has much more to say about Lie-Nielsen's No. 6 Fore Plane. Read Lee's complete review of the No. 6 Fore Plane on the Highland Woodworking Blog.
