Detailed Description

Make A Wooden Mallet

Tuesday & Wednesday, January 30 & 31, 2018, from 5:00pm to 8:30 pm
Class Size: 6
Hands-on Class

In this class, using a combination of hand tools and power tools, you'll create a wooden mallet with a tapered, sliding wedge handle. Students will produce a sturdy joint that will stay tight without the need for glue. You'll learn about mortise and tenon joinery, the efficient use of power tools for removing material quickly, and the use of hand tools (chisels and spokeshaves) for paring down to your layout lines.
Though aimed at beginning woodworkers, this class is suitable for all skill levels. Even experienced hands will enjoy this specific joinery challenge, allowing their experience to be put to use in a collaborative class environment. The skills and theory introduced in this class will prove invaluable for your future furniture making endeavors. No tools are required, though students are encouraged to bring their own tools if desired. (See tool list)
The joiner's style mallet you'll take away will be made of durable ash and will serve you well for driving chisels and gouges, for cabinet carcass / joiner assembly or as a persuasive tool to adorn your office desk, always at the ready to gavel to attention any admiring followers.

If you have any of the following tools, please bring them:
  • Sharp 1/2" bevel edged chisel
  • Sharp flat bottom spokeshave
  • small flush-cut saw
  • small hand saw
  • marking gauge
  • marking knife

  • Shop Apron
