Detailed Description
Narex Richter Cryo-Treated Bevel Edged Chisels - Long Handle
These are long-handled versions of Narex's Richter Cryo-Treated Bevel Edged Chisels.
They are intended for paring and trimming, rather than chopping and mallet-driven cutting.
They feature tang-style blades, drop forged from high quality chromium-vanadium steel. The blades are
cryogenically treated and tempered to a minimum of 62 Rc. This provides superior edge retention properties,
balanced with an ease of sharpening.
Care is given with the factory's finish-grinding, so your initial conditioning of the chisel's back and bevel will take very little time to complete. The side bevels slope down to an ultra-thin edge profile, allowing the chisel to reach
into tight areas like the corners of dovetail sockets.
Fitted to the blades are elegantly shaped European ash handles. Finished clear with boiled linseed oil
and shellac, the nuanced beauty of the wood grain remains fully visible. The handles measure 1-1/4"
at their largest diameter and are 8" in length measured from the ferrule. Both a joy to the eye
and the hand, the smoothly turned and polished ash handles nestle comfortably into your palm. Where the
blades tang inserts into the handle, a sturdy stainless steel ferrule bolsters the connection and a
leather washer cushions impacts from mallet use. Widths shown are actual imperial dimensions, not metric
equivalents.
(Note: due to the narrow profile, the 1/8" width
does NOT have beveled edges)
Richter chisels are cryogenically treated during the manufacturing process. After initial hardening,
cryogenic treatment cools the steel down using liquid nitrogen to temperatures as low as 190 °C
(-310 °F). This completes transformation of austenite, which increases both the hardness and toughness
of the steel.
