Detailed Description

Record Power 12-Piece Carving Chisel Set with QuickStart Guide and DVD

Record Power's 12-piece carving set is an extraordinary value for woodworkers of all skill levels. The 12 tools are made from high-quality spring alloy steel to maintain sharpness and minimize corrosion. The tools have solid beech handles securely mounted to a robust tang so they are tough enough for hand and mallet carving. With the twelve included profiles, you can carve almost anything you can imagine. Though each pattern varies, tools are about 9" overall length with 5" handles. These tools will require sharpening before use.

Learning to Carve

The included one-hour-plus DVD and illustrated booklet were developed by renowned British woodcarver Mike Davies, and were inspired by his book Woodcarving by Numbers. In the booklet and DVD, Mike covers the basics of woodcarving from lumber selection and sharpening to the "Significant Six" carving techniques.

Each tool profile pattern is numbered from 1-12 so you don't have to learn about sizes and sweeps. Just choose the right tool based on the numbered reference in the DVD and downloadable project sheets, and match it to the profile in the booklet.

The instructional booklet includes two detailed projects that will help you learn basic carving techniques and become familiar with the tools.

Nine additional projects can also be downloaded below for FREE.

Package Contents:
  • Twelve Carving Tools - see specs below
  • DVD (One hour and 18 minutes)

Tool Patterns

Carving tool election can be very confusing for the beginner. Tools are described by width, cross section (usually refered to as sweep) and shank shape. To make matters worse, there are three systems used to describe these features. The systems - the Sheffield list, the London pattern and the Continental System - are similar enough to be confused and different enough to be confusing.

  • Width is pretty straight forward - it's just the width of the tool at the cutting edge.
  • Sweep describes the shape of the tool cross section. For most U-shaped carving tools, the number refers to the depth of the U shape. Low numbers are shallow (#3 is nearly flat) and high numbers are deeply curved (#9 is usually about a half-circle). Numbers higher than 12 generally refer to V shapes or veiners. #1 is a flat straight chisel with a double bevel. #2 is a flat skew chisel.
  • Shank shape refers to the shape of the steel between the handle and cutting edge. The three most common shapes are straight, fishtail & spoon. Those shapes may also be modified by changing the curvature along the length of the blade. It can be straight, bent, back bent, dogleg or curved.

Confused? Of course you are! Especially when you consider that a #5 straight gouge in London Pattern will not be the same as a #5 straight gouge on the Sheffield list or in the Continetal system. That is why Mike Davies and Record Power developed the Carving by Numbers system. It gets you past all that initial confusion so you can more easily select the tools you need to complete a project right away. Once you're familiar with all of these tools, you may want to add other tools.
