Detailed Description
Plane Handle Set
Replace the plastic handles on your iron bench planes with this set made of dark stained European beech. The rear handle is our custom design.
It's a little larger than factory handles, and has been shaped to increase comfort for ring and little fingers at the bottom and for the web
between thumb and forefinger at the top.
It fits many Record, Stanley & other Bailey-pattern planes from #4 through #8 (Some fitting and drilling
may be required for the handle and knob to seat and be secured on to the castings, which can differ slightly). A replacement screw measuring 7/32" x 20 TPI x
4-3/8" long is provided to accommodate the rear handle's extra height. A front knob screw is sold separately.
(Please read the note about screw fit below.)
Set Components
- Rear handle (tote) — It is 4-1/4" high and its base is 3-1/2" long x 15/16" wide.
- Front knob — It is 2-3/4" tall. The large diameter is 1-3/4" and the diameter at the base is 1-9/32".
- Screw for rear handle. It is 7/32" x 20 TPI x 4-3/8" long. (Please read the note about screw fit below.)
SCREW FIT - VERY IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ!
Not all bench planes use this 7/32" x 20 TPI “Whitworth” threaded screw design from England. If your rear handle screw or
front knob screw is NOT 7/32" OD x 20 TPI, the longer screw with our rear handle (and the front knob screw that we sell separately),
will NOT fit the threads in the casting of your plane. This is especially true with newer Stanley planes because they made changes to the screw threads they use on their planes.
