Wood Finish Surface Preparation

What is the best way to prepare a surface prior to applying finish?

For a pristine surface for finishing, first clean with mineral spirits - a white or grey Scotchbrite pad speeds up the process. Next remove the mineral spirits with denatured alcohol and wiping rags.

SAFETY FIRST: Always soak rags and steel wool (synthetic or real) in water prior to drying, then dispose of them in a safe and environmentally-friendly manner.
