A Tribute to Christopher Schwarz and the gang at
Lost Art Press

Dear Woodworker,

Introduction In its long history, Highland Woodworking has done business with hundreds of companies of all sizes. One of the best small companies we've encountered is Lost Art Press, the brainchild of Christopher Schwarz and John Hoffman. Along with their longtime employee, Megan Fitzpatrick, and recent additions to their staff, they have succeeded at resurrecting the old days of the publishing industry, bringing to light many rare 18th and 19th century manuscripts published about woodworking during the heyday of professional hand tool craftsmanship.

In addition to exquisitely reprinting these timeless works for our consumption, Lost Art Press has also attracted many of today's leading woodworking authors, generously offering them a sweet deal and helping Lost Art add to their treasure trove of both historic and modern literature that has strong appeal to serious woodworkers.

Of the dozen or so publishers that we purchase woodworking books from, Lost Art Press accounts for more of our book sales than all the other publishers combined.

We invite you to watch the videos below to learn more about the folks at Lost Art Press and what they've been up to.

Alan Noel

Remembering Alan Noel

We are sad to share that longtime Highland Woodworking instructor Alan Noel has passed away. Alan was a widely acknowledged expert in wood finishing and furniture restoration. For decades, he enthusiastically shared his expertise and passion for the craft through his many classes at Highland Woodworking, seminars with local guilds, and the people he worked with throughout his career running Noel's Woodwork. Always willing to share what he’d learned, his finishing tips can be found in previous issues of Wood News and in the Highland Woodworking digital library.

Alan was a true finishing master, often employing techniques and materials only decades of well traveled and tutored experience can accrue in one person. He will be missed for his experience, instruction, and candor about a woodworking topic that is easy to learn and incredibly difficult to master. Alan will be missed.

Northwest Woodworking Studio classes

Northwest Woodworking Studio ONLINE Course on Setting Up Shop Starts November 9

Now is the time to learn more about Gary Rogowski’s upcoming ONLINE classes from our partner, the Northwest Woodworking Studio. His popular course, Setting Up Shop, begins on Saturday, Nov. 9 and runs every Saturday through Feb. 8 (with 2 weeks off in December).

We highly recommend this course. Gary’s creative ideas and longtime woodworking and teaching experience will help accelerate your growth as a woodworker. As a practical exercise, part of the course involves building at home one each of several wooden jigs and hand tools. Henceforth you can utilize these tools as you become increasingly skilled working in your shop.

Partnering with Northwest Woodworking Studio, we are working to make woodworking education more accessible to students everywhere. We invite you to utilize all the resources that Highland Woodworking and NWS have to offer.

Nancy Hiller's Little Acorns

We at Highland were very proud to be featured in Nancy Hiller’s 2020 "Little Acorns" profile on the Lost Art Press blog. A lot has happened during the store’s past 40+ years and Nancy did a great job capturing some of our favorite stories. Take a look at Nancy's article and learn a little of the history of Highland Woodworking.

Lost Art Press origins

Anthe Building Restoration

A major milestone for Lost Art Press occurred in April 2023, when they purchased an historic building in downtown Covington, Kentucky. The Anthe Building was built in 1897.

The building, which Chris referred to as a "generational restoration project", will allow Lost Art Press to bring its entire fulfillment operation for their book and tool sales in house just half a mile from their headquarters.

Click the link below to read a FAQ about the building. You can also search the Lost Art Press blog using the term "Anthe" to read the periodic updates on the progress of the building's restoration.
