Here's My Woodworking!
By Dennis Dickey
Shelby, AL

Woodworking has been a hobby of mine for almost thirty years now. I started with small projects. Through the years, I have used the experience I have gained on each project to challenge me to do larger projects. As I have stretched my abilities, I have moved to larger projects and acquired better equipment and tools.

One of the things that I have been interested in learning was how to turn wooden bowls. I have a mini-lathe that I use to turn pens, but I did not have the knowledge, skills, or tools to turn wooden bowls. I read some books about it, but I still was not comfortable on exactly how to get started.

A year ago, I decided to take the basic bowl turning class at Highland Woodworking taught by Phil Colson. Phil explained the process of bowl turning and the necessary tools as we each turned a bowl in class. He gave us the basics for us to go back home to do our own bowl turning. Phil did a great job!

I have now been turning bowls for a year. I pick up logs people put on the curb to be taken to the garbage dump and I also get logs directly from the dump. If I see a tree crew cutting trees and there is a log that is not too large, I will get it for myself.

Starting with a rough log and turning a wooden bowl is addictive. Each tree and each log is different, which in turn makes each bowl unique.
