Here's My Woodworking!
By Charlie Smith
Brady, TX

I grew up helping my father build houses. After working in the electronics field for 12 years I grew tired of city life and moved to the mountains of New Mexico. Unfortunately, there was no work in my field where I landed so I took up carpentry as a way to put food on the table. Somewhere along the way I discovered that I really enjoyed working with wood. I spent several years in a cabinet shop in Texas with a friend and began building furniture during that time. I was too slow at it to make a living, but my field finally reached the rural areas and I went back to that to support my family.

I have always kept a hand in woodworking, building small projects in my garage, but when I retired (the first time) I set out to build and outfit an actual workshop. It's small, but it fits well for me and I plan to finish my days making furniture for my family and whatever projects catch my interest. I also have an 8 year old grandson who I enjoy building projects with.

Some time back I was informed that my two lovely granddaughters needed jewelry boxes. Having recently completed my shop to a point that I felt ready for this project, I began to decide what I wanted to build for them. With a lot of pain and do-overs I finally came up with the boxes you see here. One is Walnut and Maple and the other is Cherry. It was a learning experience, and a bit of anxiety while waiting for Christmas to see if they would meet the expectations. I shouldn't have worried, no matter what, granddaughters are a grandfather's delight.
