Here's My Workshop!

by Mike Davis
San Marcos, TX

When I retired three years ago I quickly went through the list of things I wanted to do when I retired. Paint the house, refinish the cabinets, replace faucets, etc. When I finished the list I became bored very quickly and decided I had to get a hobby. I decided on woodworking but had to start from scratch because I had no equipment and no place to work.

I bought a 16’ x 30’ portable building shell and finished out the inside. I installed the wiring and lighting, insulated the walls and ceiling and put pegboard on the walls. Because I’m in central Texas it’s too hot and humid most of the year to work comfortably so I installed window AC units.

Then I started buying woodworking equipment and supplies. I tried to organize my tools, wood and supplies to give me as much work space as possible, and quickly discovered that 480 sq. ft. wasn’t big enough for all the equipment I wanted and still have room to work.

I felt like I needed twice as much space so I expanded by adding a 16’ x 32’ extension on one end, which made the new building “T” shaped and approximately 1,000 sq. ft.

I have arranged the equipment so that cutting and sanding are done in the older section and assembly and finishing are done in the new part.

My first project was this cedar lined blanket chest.

These are a few more of the projects I’ve done. An Adirondack Chair with footstool and table, and a picnic table.

I am currently working on a play house for my granddaughter.

I have a lot to learn about woodworking but I have the rest of my life to get there.
