Here's My Workshop!
By Steven Krause
Somers, WI

I started off in life wanting to be a machinist and metal worker. I had jobs that would let me expand my knowledge in this area and started to obtain some tools. Then in one year I had a career change and bought an old house. I started working on the house which led to buying woodworking tools instead of metal working tools as what happens to a lot of us.

My first wood shop was in the basement of the house making it handy for all the remodeling but was a pain to get materials up and down the stairs. When it came time for a new garage, I went big as seen in the picture above. I have a three-car garage with equal space in back for my shop, which is 850 square feet.

The wife wanted a heated garage and I of course wanted a heated shop. To solve this and other problems such as electric, Phone, and Internet I had a 6-inch conduit run from the basement to the garage when it was built. Our house is hadronically heated, so it was no problem to run a hot water and return line through the conduit. Both garage and shop have in floor heat and it is great. During the cold winters in Wisconsin I keep the temperature in the shop at 62. My feet are always warm and the rest of me is comfortable. Then it was years of upgrading tools and building cabinetry to get to what I have today.
