Q&A

Question:

I am a 54-year-old man and I am interested in woodworking and wood turning. Weekends are the only option for me. Where would you recommend a novice like myself start? I have never done any carpentry/woodworking/wood turning, but would like to learn. Would a beginning turners class get me started, or should I take the beginner's router class or other tool classes?

Answer:

Thanks for your question and for your interest in woodworking. It is never too late to start!

The best way to begin learning about woodturning and woodworking is to take an introductory class. The instructor will introduce you to the various techniques and tools that will make the experience more understandable and rewarding. You will then have a better idea in which direction your woodworking heart will take you.

[Editor's note: Coming up here at Highland Woodworking on October 17-18 is a hands-on woodworking class suitable for a beginner, Bob Saye's Make and Take a Bookcase . Also, Hal Simmons teaches his popular Beginning Woodturning class on November 8.]

In addition, there are lots of great books, DVDs and even some very good television shows that can further your learning experience.

That said, experience is the best teacher. Practice with your tools and you will quickly gain the skills necessary to match your ambitions.

Enjoy your woodworking!
