Sizing Bowl Gouges

I get a lot of questions about how Bowl Gouges are sized. When you order a Bowl Gouge, you have to know where it was made.

If the tool comes from England, Australia or New Zealand then sizing is determined by the diameter of the flute .

If the tool comes from North America or China then sizing is determined by the diameter of the steel .

Highland Woodworking sells both types. Bodger comes from China and Oneway comes from Canada; both sized using the diameter of the steel. A Bodger or Oneway Bowl Gouge that is listed as a 3/8" Bowl Gouge is by British standards a 1/4" Bowl Gouge.

Confused yet?

Most turners are more accustomed to the British sizing method: Crown , Sorby , etc.

Highland Woodworking lists the Bowl Gouge according to where it is made.
