Sizing Bowl Gouges

I get a lot of questions about how Bowl Gouges are sized. When you order a Bowl Gouge, you have to know where it was made.

If the tool comes from England, Australia or New Zealand then sizing is determined by the diameter of the flute.

If the tool comes from North America or China then sizing is determined by the diameter of the steel.

Highland Woodworking sells both types. Bodger comes from China and Oneway comes from Canada; both sized using the diameter of the steel. A Bodger or Oneway Bowl Gouge that is listed as a 3/8" Bowl Gouge is by British standards a 1/4" Bowl Gouge.

Confused yet?

Most turners are more accustomed to the British sizing method: Crown, Sorby, etc.

Highland Woodworking lists the Bowl Gouge according to where it is made.
