Here's My Stuff!

by Martin Harris
Sacramento, CA

I had just retired after a varied career in government, academia and the private sector when I saw my first woodturning demonstration in June, 2007. I promptly rushed home to set up a workshop in my basement.

Starting with a Jet Mini, I later added a Nova DVR XP, the biggest lathe I could get down the stairs!

The basement measures 14' x 11' x 6'2" and provides a nice all-year temperature of 65-72F. I share the space with the water heater, central-air system and a large number of boxes of "things" that my daughter cannot fit into her 600 sq. ft. Manhattan apartment.

Of course, there isn't enough room in the basement, so the garage has become the shop annex. Here you will find a bandsaw, tablesaw, chainsaw and drum sander. The wood piles contain persimmon, podocarpus and sycamore harvested in 2007; cherry and camphor of unknown vintage; black walnut cut in 2007; peach, black walnut and carob cut in July 2009.
