Detailed Description
Bowback Side Windsor Chair Kit
Meticulously prepared parts have been created by experienced chairmakers to make this project doable by an intermediate woodworker in about 10 hours.
The hard maple spindles have been turned and sanded. The poplar seat has been cut to shape and holes bored at the correct angles, requiring only final shaping and sanding. The oak bows have been steambent to shape. It's a great project for learning how to build a chair. Tools needed to complete the project include an orbital sander, hammer, drill and a few chisels.
The Bowback Side Chair was first introduced in Philadelphia in the 1780s during the Federal Period, and was the first style to be mass produced for families, often built in sets of 12 or 24 or more. These chairs have endured as a simple country chair from the past. Our bowbacks are hand made with a squared bow and a single carved beading.
Highland Blogger Kelley O'Toole assembled the Sackback Windsor Chair Kit, and wrote about her experience on the Highland Blog. Read about it here!
