Adding a Japanese blade to a classic European handsaw, bow saw design advocated by teachers like Tage Frid and Anthony Guidice is pure genius. The curved cheeks and handles are ergonomically made from quality hardwoods. The entire frame is beautifully sanded, oiled, and polished, and tension is applied through a stainless rod and thumbscrew. The assembled saw rests easily in the hand and feels much lighter than its appearance suggests. The heart and soul of this saw, though, is its Japanese style blade. The teeth are impulse hardened, thinner than its western counterparts, and the tooth profile allows fast, clean cutting in any direction through wood with very little set.
The Classic 400, at 26-3/4" long (handle tip to handle tip) by 12-1/2" tall, is sized for smaller users or for cutting joinery. The distance from the bottom of the bridge to the teeth on the blade is 6". The saw comes with a 1-1/4" wide, 15 tpi blade that is 15-3/4" long with a hole to hole measurement of 14-5/8". The saw can be outfitted with an optional narrow blade for fine joinery or cutting curves.
The impulse hardened teeth of the blade cannot be sharpened with saw files.
