Japanese Yari Kanna Draw Shave - 3/4 inch
Japanese Yari Kanna are unusual tools, descended from ancient Korean and Japanese bent chisels used for shaving and flattening surfaces, similar to adzes, drawknives and crooked knives in the West. Curved, double edged, spear-pointed "Yari Kanna" can be used for ground work in relief carvings, and for creating unique hand-tooled textures on panels, frames and furniture.
Forged and ground by hand in Miki City's famous Iyoroi shop, these tools feature the same laminated "white steel" backs and dense red oak handles that rank our Iyoroi bench chisels among Japan's finest. The small Yari Kanna is usually worked with one hand. Both edges are sharpened to permit cutting on the draw stroke or on the push, typically while holding the tool palm up and using the wrist and off hand for leverage. The chisel's blade is 3/4" wide by 2-1/4" long; overall length is about 8-1/2".
