Veritas Medium Shoulder Plane
The shoulder plane is the ultimate tool for trimming a joint to a perfect fit. There is no better plane for trimming the shoulder of a tenon to perfection or for rebating work.
The Veritas medium shoulder plane is proportioned for versatility; it measures 7" long by 11/16" wide and weighs 2 lb. The ductile cast iron body is accurately machined and ground so that the sole and sides are flat and square.
If you have ever used or even held a traditional shoulder plane, you will appreciate how this plane comes to hand. The unique lever cap with a pivoting knob lets you adjust the plane to fit your hand and preferred holding style. The concave knob rests in the web of your hand, giving you a secure grip without the need of a vise-like pressure.
The through-hole in the body adds to grip security but has to be experienced to be understood. The planes adjustable toe lets you narrow the mouth for very fine shavings with minimal tear-out. The low bed angle of 15° combined with the 25° blade bevel results in a cutting angle of 40° for exceptional end-grain cutting performance. Set screws along the side let you accurately position the blade and require no adjustment when replacing the blade after sharpening.
Blades are lapped, 1/8" (0.125") thick, and come in PM-V11 tool steel.
Made in Canada.

PM-V11 Steel
All of the Veritas bench, block and shoulder planes that we stock have PM-V11 steel blades. Veritas conducted extensive testing and determined that PM-V11 offers the best balance of hardness, edge retention and ease of sharpening in tool steels. It hones to a very fine edge and can easily be sharpened with commonly available sharpening abrasives.
From Veritas
PM-V11 is a powdered metal (PM) alloy. To form a PM alloy, constituent metals are melted and mixed together, then atomized, creating very small particles that cool and harden, forming a powder. This powder is screened to ensure consistent particle size, and then heated under pressure to form a billet. The billet is then rolled to the required thickness, ready to process as a conventionally smelted steel would be. The PM process yields a steel with a very fine grain structure that is uniform throughout.
