Woodturners who prefer actually doing woodturning as opposed to constantly resharpening their turning tools will appreciate this affordable set of 3 carbide turning tool patterns developed by Rikon.
The Rikon system consists of a 16"-long machined aluminum handle with an anti-vibration grip, and three steel shafts 8-3/8" long. Each shaft has either a circle, square or diamond-shaped tungsten carbide insert cutter that will stay sharp far longer than conventional carbon or high speed steel turning tools. Once a cutter finally becomes dull after many hours of use, it can be quickly rotated to provide a fresh sharp edge. Once all edges have become dull, they can be touched up with a diamond hone for additional use, or replaced with a new insert cutter.
The machined shafts are milled with a flat bottom for stability on the tool rest, plus two side bevels that give extra support when shifting the cutter to an angled skew position for making shear cuts. The handle for the shafts is equipped with a unique chucking system that permits rapid switching from one shaft to another. Simply unscrew the knurled chuck collet to insert any of the three supplied shafts, tighten the chuck collar, and you are ready to turn.
The handle measures 16" x 1.4" diameter and weighs 28 oz. Each shaft measures 8.4" long x .83" wide, and weighs 18 oz.
The dimensions of the carbide cutters are:
Square Cutter Size - 13 mm x 1 3mm x 3.2 mm (approx. 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/8")
Round Cutter Size - 14 mm Diameter x 3.2 mm (approx. 9/16" x 1/8")
Diamond Cutter Size - 31 mm x 13.8 mm x 3.2 mm (approx. 1-1/4" x 9/16" x 1/8")
Tip angle is 48 degrees
