French Polish Workshop
September 11, 2010

French polish has long been regarded as the most beautiful finish for fine wood furniture and, because it imparts a finer sound to stringed instruments, is overwhelmingly preferred by luthiers. This finish actually does not involve polish at all but is simply a method of applying shellac. Alan will demonstrate his method for achieving this finish that's as easy as riding a bike. He will show you how to apply, maintain, repair and restore this classic finish.

You'll Love our Mail-In Blade Sharpening Service

"Recently I used your saw sharpening service and I wanted to let you know that they did a super job on my blade. I not only needed the blade sharpened, but one tip was missing and they replaced it as well. Turn around time was only about a week from my home in Tennessee. The blade cuts as good as a new one. You can bet that I will be using you again when needed."

Thanks, Charles Arkon

New Rikon 10-600VS 16" Var. Speed Scroll Saw, Only $149.99

One of the best values we found at the recent IWF woodworking show in Atlanta was this full-featured 16" variable speed scrollsaw from Rikon, the first scrollsaw we could recommend in this price range for many years. A highly useful bonus on this saw is its variable high speed power take-off. An optional and very affordable flexible shaft accessory can turn the saw into a reciprocal power carving machine.

While not a professional scrollsaw like our 20" Dewalt DW788 , the Rikon 10-600VS is an outstanding value in a quality saw that will nicely serve the needs of any homeshop woodworker. We consider it a price breakthrough that lets any shop afford a dedicated saw for intricate scrollsaw work.

LIGHTS OUT DEAL

An overlooked misprint on the saw's packaging prompted the manufacturer to offer them to us at a significant savings off our regular cost, enabling us to pass along great savings to you. This saw will handle all your cutoff needs up to 11-5/8" wide at 90 degrees and more than 8" wide at 45 degrees. Ideal for beveled miter cuts on large crown molding. Weighs only 37 lbs, so transports easily.

What's the Secret to Achieving Repeatably Consistent Turnings?

By Peter Galbert
Bethel, NY

When I started turning parts for chairs, the first hurdles that I faced were creating the shapes that made up the balusters. The bead and the cove are the basic elements, and learning to make them is challenging. I spent countless hours making rows of useless bead and rows of useless coves.

Recent WOOD SLICER Testimonial
I recently purchased three band saw blades for my 10 inch Inca 260, included in the purchase was a Wood Slicer Bandsaw Blade. When I unwrapped it, I realized this was something special. I immediately installed the Wood Slicer, fired up the machine and started cutting 6 " X 6" White Oak rough stock. Results? WOW, is all I could say to myself. The cuts were so good I had to look twice to see the cut side from the machine planed face! What a blade, I have never been more pleased with a bandsaw blade and its performance! — R. Simon
