Erich's Incredible
Wooden Machine
Is it a sculpture or a machine? For the past several years, woodworker Erich Schatt of Zurich, Switzerland has used his free time designing and building an exquisite machine built entirely of wood. What exactly does the machine do? Well, mainly it causes people's jaws to drop whenever they see Erich sitting in the driver's seat pedaling away on his amazing contraption, spinning the dozens of wooden gears whose movements are intricately intertwined using wooden chains (that resemble the drive chain on a bicycle). It even features wooden universal joints and a wooden transmission.

Going Pro as a Woodworker
Part 3 of a Series:
A Suitable Workspace

By Douglas Bittinger
Smoky Mountain Woodworks
Simply put, no matter how much space you have, you will quickly get to a point where you wish you had more. Therefore the key to being happy is to make the most efficient use of the space you have available. In this month's article I will explore space utilization in a shop along with a look at climate control, lighting, ventilation, handling dust and noise, shop furniture, flooring, wall coverings, and the finishing room.

How to Make a Small Brass Hammer
By P. Michael Henderson

Some tasks in a shop call for a small brass hammer - such as adjusting a wooden plane, tapping on a chisel, or just for making adjustments to joinery. While these hammers can be purchased, I decided to make my own.

Since we humans may, uh, become a little tipsy from said revelry, here are a few tips to help save Ma's and Grandma's dining, coffee or end tables that may just get in the way.

What are those tips?

HAND PLANES
The single woodworking tool possessing the greatest measure of mystique is the hand plane. (It's no accident that a hand plane has always been featured as part of Highland Woodworking's logo, even as the logo evolved over the past 30 years.)
It's been speculated that our store displays a greater variety of hand planes than any other store in the world. We do have a bunch of them. Here is some of what our staff has written about hand planes over the years.
