Repairing and Replacing Turned Column Bases

One of my recent turning jobs was to was to repair and replace the turned column bases on the front porch of a local music celebrity. Porch column bases often deteriorate long before the columns themselves need repair, and if the bases are positioned and maintained properly, the owner can reduce the potential weather/time damage to the columns themselves.

I recently had an epiphany of sorts when I was deciding to make handles out of a dead Japanese Red Maple Tree. Why only cut short handles when I could cut a long one for an entirely different purpose? Why not turn a custom handle for a carbide chisel? So I did just that.
