Acrylic Modified Lacquer

wood finishing

by Alan Noel
Professional Wood Finisher

When it comes to lacquers, acrylic modified lacquers are very useful in many different situations for the home and in the finishing shop. They are also referred to as "water white" lacquer because they are as clear as water. Think clear fingernail polish….

Here are some tips and facts about this "water white" acrylic modified lacquer.

  1. Acrylic modified lacquers have excellent film clarity.
  2. They will not yellow with age.
  3. They were designed for use in wet areas such as the kitchen and bath.
  4. They may be used over solid colored lacquers for more durability.
  5. They may be used over "acrylic latex paint" to achieve a higher gloss.
  6. They may be used over acrylic latex or oil based paint for layered glazing techniques.
  7. They make an excellent clear coat for polished brasses to keep them from tarnishing.
  8. They can be touched up with fingernail polish.
