Benchcrafted Tail Vise

The Benchcrafted Tail Vise is the original flagship of the award-winning Benchcrafted line of workbench hardware. Besides being extremely robust with absolutely precise machining, this vise's real claim to fame lies in its incredibly smooth and effortless operation. Apply a modest spin to the handle and marvel asthe vise action first accelerates and then slowly coasts to a stop. This is the way every tool should feel in response to a craftsman's touch. This style of tail vise is also referred to as a wagon wheel end vise.

The Benchcrafted Tail Vise was first conceived to meet the needs of a Roubo-style workbench with a top at least 4" thick, though it can also be installed on thinner benchtops and can be retrofitted to an existing bench.

Handwheel

Benchcrafted offers three options for the handwheel of the Tail Vise. Both are completely designed and manufactured in the USA.

  • Machined — This handwheel is fully machined and features a black wrinkle coated aluminum knob.
  • Cast — This handwheel has a retro rough-cast look and features a black wrinkle coated aluminum knob.
  • Classic — features a 9" steel sliding handle assembly with a black “Parkerized” finish. (This one won't spin like the Machined and cast versions.)

Specifications
  • Rolled carbon-steel acme-threaded 1-1/4" dia. screw with 4 tpi pitch strikes a balance between rapid movement & controlled gradual clamping pressure
  • 1" thick acme nut milled from solid billet of cold rolled steel
  • Reversible sliding plate for both right-hand or left-hand bench installations
  • 3/8" thick cold-rolled steel flange, black finished
  • Cold-rolled steel guide rails support the robust sliding plate assembly, which runs in precisely milled grooves
  • Crubber jaw liner
  • Includes everything you need to install the vise, except wood
  • All components designed and made in the USA

We offer a Set of five Spax Lag Screws for installation of the Tail Vise End Cap. These are the screws recommended by Spax for this purpose. (See pages 8-10 of the installation instructions below.) We strongly recommend them for this application.
