Made from 220 grit black silicon carbide, the Large Naniwa Flattening Stone should be big enough to handle any waterstone flattening task you have. It's 11-13/16" by 5-7/8" x 13/16" (300 mm x 150 mm x 20mm). It has grippy rubber feet on each end to hold it in place while you work.
Naniwa recommends that the flattening stone be soaked in water for 10 minutes. Prepare your waterstone as you would before using it to sharpen. If you normally soak your stone, soak it before flattening. If you normally splash and sharpen, splash before flattening.
Just pencil a grid pattern on the stone you wish to flatten and rub it over the flattening stone until the lines disappear. The flattening stone has diagonal grooves cut across its surface to drain away water and waste grit.
This stone should be used to flatten medium to fine (500-6000) waterstones.
Made in Japan.
